After looking at the excellent work Ed (gmpullman) did with a American Model Builders kit, I decided I could have use of an extra caboose for my CNR based layout. Unfortunately, AMB doesn’t advertise a caboose in HO for CNR. Months ago I also tried to locate a resin kit from Sylvan Scale without success. A search on eBay was also unsuccessful.
Can anyone helps in locating a kit, either wood or resin, for the CNR wooden caboose?
While it is not what you are asking for, I bought a couple of True Line Trains cabooses off Evil Bay a while ago which to me here in Australia at least look the part… the only qualm being the moulded Orange end plates that show sunlight through them in the wrong light of day…
Guy, Canadian Express Line as noted has a a Juneco kit and a George Taylor kit. I have built both and both are good wood kits with, I would say the Taylor kit being somewhat better.
I agree that True Line Trains cabeese are quite nice. I have four of then in CNR and one in CP. The unpainted end plates of the CNR ones is certainly the most obvious flaw. Nevertheless I am eager to receive the transfer caboose I ordered some 3+ years ago.
Jim,
I didn’t know about George Taylor kit. I had a look at an article on the web about the construction of the Juneco kit and I didn’t like the quality of the parts compared to AMB products. What about George Taylor kit?
Can you post or send me a photo of your finished model?
Guy, if you want one of those excellent Sylvan CNR cabooses, simply contact Clare Gilbert, the owner, HERE.
I had one, decorated in orange with the early white leaf, which went to a friend when I backdated my layout to the late '30s. He offered to replace it with a Sylvan kit if I could find one. I contacted Clare and he offered to make one available (the TrueLine r-t-r models had pretty-well replaced his kits, at least with most newer modellers who weren’t capable of or didn’t want to bother building kits). However, I found a used TrueLine caboose, in the earlier brown colour scheme and opted for it in order to save my friend some money. At that time, at least, Clare was quite willing to put together the castings and parts needed for a kit.
Here’s my version of the Sylvan kit:

This one is the bargain True Line one which I found:
As has been mentioned, some of the unpainted plastic parts on the ends don’t exactly match the colour of the painted body shells. Since I had disassembled mine to add window shades, it was easy enough to paint those parts.
They were first brush-painted with Tamiya, which I’ve read adheres well enough to engineering-type plastics. After the paint had dried/cured for 24 hours, I airbrushed all of those parts with Polly Scale paint, mixed to match the
I have already contacted Sylvan Scale a few weeks ago and they said they don’t make this kit anymore. I should have bought one about a year ago when there was still one on the shelves of a LHS. I was not sure then if I wanted to tackle resin kits though.
Realy nice job on those cabeese. I realy like the way you weather cars.
