Looking for a hobby shop in or near Avon Lake, Ohio

I’ve got an appointment early tomorrow in Avon Lake. Any hobby shops you can recommend in the area??? I’ll be heading back to Toledo so anything on the way back would also be of interest.

Thanks

There’s a good one in Westlake on Detroit Avenue. Don’t know the number but I’ll bet you can find it with a quick search, I think it’s Wings and Wheels but not sure of the exact name. Lots of RR books and magazines in addition to fairly good selection of trains.

underworld,

The one on Detroit that cnw4001 mentioned is called Wings Hobby. Al is the owner and Betsy helps out behind the counter. They are nice folks. Wings has a nice selection of HO & N scale items - usually about 10% off MSRP. They also have a terrific selection of reference books and magazines - practically one entire side of the store! Wings Hobby is located in Lakewook - just east of Avon Lake. You can get at it off of I-90. Their address/phone # is:

17112 Detriot Avenue
(216) 221-5383

The other good LHS near there is called Depot Train & Hobby. They are off of I-71, east on W. 130th. Good store but doesn’t have quite the selection as Wings. It’s too bad that Jim won’t be there at Depot Train. He’s the resident expert about trains there and REALLY knows his stuff. Everytime I visit, I always walk away having learned something new. Depot Train & Hobby’s address/phone # is:

4342 E. 130th Street
(216) 252-8880

Anyhow, hope that works out for you.

Tom

underworld- Sorry I can’t help you much, if you travelling an hour south I could stear you to a couple. If you ever make a trip to the akron area i can tell you of a couple shops there

t-stage- Didn’t realize you were so close to me. I’m from the akron area so your not that far off from me. I might have to stop by some of those places on my next trip up to cleveland.

Heritage Train and Hobby, 36840 Detroit Road, Avon, Ohio , ( Behind Avons Police Station). 440-934-1650. Owners name is Scott. It’s a rather small place, but the prices are below retail and the selection is pretty good.

Andrew,

Wings if open everyday but Wednesday and Sundays. Depot Train & Hobby is open everyday but Sundays.

If you do go to Depot Train, try and stop iin there, if you can, on either a Monday, Wednesday, or Saturday. Jim works those days and is a plethora of info and ideas. He’s quite a character in his own right, and a talented guy at modeling, too. Jim just took first place & best-of-show for his scratch-built boxcar at the regional NMRA show in May. It is displayed in one of the display cases as you first walk in.

I try and give both places my business to help them out. Andrew, what are the LHSs you recommend around the Akron area. Isn’t there a good one around Cuyahoga Heights? (I’ve heard it mentioned but can’t remember the name of it.)

Tom

Tom- Both of the good hobby shops by me happen to also carry weird hours.
Trains Ect. located in Cuyahoga Falls is a nice little shop that is open m-f 4:30-7 and sat. 10-1 (during the winter 10-3 on sat) It has a pretty good selection of cars and engines in N, HO and lionel. I work there every other thursday and when the boss is on vacation. it’s located at 2046 Bailey Rd. Cuyahoga falls.

The other place is S&W trains at 938 Kenmore Blvd in Akron. It has about the same hours. It mainly has HO and carries a good number of used gear. It also has a nice size club layout in the back room that you can see through a window. Though the owner doesn’t let you actually go back and see it which is a shame.

There’s also another shop that is opn during the day but it hasn’t ordered anything since the early ninetys and the staff are somtimes less then pleasent. We also have a new store which is not yet opened yet.
Andrew

What is Whistle Stop Hobby like? They are also in Cuyahoga Falls. (Sorry, I said “Heights” before instead of “Falls”.)

Tom

The Whistle stop is the one in which they haven’t received any new invetory in ten years. About 5-6 years ago it was a great shop. Unfourtanitly the owner passed away and the wife took over. That is about the time things started to go downhill. She doesn’t have much interest in it and is just waiting for someone to buy it. It’s truly amazing how much gossip you hear about other LHS’s when you work in one[(-D]
