Hey all, I’m just getting back into the hobby after having moved on to other interests through the years. Now with two young sons who are obsessed with trains, we’ve convinced my wife to let us have space in the basement to build a layout. While that space is getting cleared and we work on plans for a layout, I’ve been spending some time weathering some cars and loco’s we’ve picked up here and there over the past year. This is an example of what i"ve been doing - it’s an Athearn blue box SW1500 and I still need to add the detail parts.
Welcome back to the hobby. Funny how girls, school, kids and other things get us side tracked for a few years. Glad to hear your sons are into trains. I didn’t have a good place when mine were the right age, so there was little interest. Busy with my work kept me from getting grandchildren into it. Now that I have some time, maybe I can drum up a little interest, but I’m not going to hold my breath.
Be sure to do some reading and planning before you spend a lot, some folks have tripped over their own non-planning. Getting trains running is important, especially with the young ones interested. However, you want them to run well, so a little planning will give you a lot of satisfaction later.
I couldn’t get your link to work. Maybe one of the more computer savy members can set it up.

I really dig it, & appreciate it!!!
I think it is well done, if you were going dor one well in the neglected…
Things that stood out for me;
The photo, lighting & composition are all nice, shows shadows & contrast well!
The hood & streak from the cab side window look sooty & well placed
Like the ‘wash effect’ bleed around the hood doors, that is nice!
The dust/rust on the running gear, looks good too, but pix can really make that louder than the human eye, so I am taking that into account.
I think this is an excellent job, if I dun that, with those Pix, I’d be pretty happy!!!
Thank you for sharing!!!
I look forward for more pix & projects from you!
Please Consider putting this in Weekend Photo Fun, on Friday or Saturday, you may get more exposure & comments too…
Thanks again!
Thanks for the feedback. This was done with chalk only, so left of the handrails, etc for better access with the brush. Going to get the smaller part with some paint. Wasn’t going for anything in particular, but had looked at some prototype photos to get an idea of how these looked in real life. Thanks again for the feedback.
We have a switcher like the one in your photo that works the local steel industry. It is filthy, dirty, rusty, sooty, and belches black smoke on a fairly regular basis. So, based on what I see of the real thing, yours looks really bang on[tup]! Nice job.
