Los Angeles Junction

Next week, a friend and I are going to California for five days of Raifaning. From Cajun Pass, Ontario, Colton, Barstow , Caliente, loop and Daggett. I would like to see the operations of the yard of LAJ. Does anyone know of any spot?

Thanks

Try asking on this site. These guys are “All SoCal all the time” www.socalrailfan.com/forums/index.php

TRAINS had a story about the LAJ in the past year or two. There were photos and maps which should help you. There may be a pedestrian friendly overpass for overhead photography.

Also, try GOOGLE satelite maps.

Isn’t Cajun Pass in Louisiana somewhere? [;)]

Carl, I don’t know. There is Pass Manchac on the west shore of Lake Pontchartrain (I crossed it many times, on every passenger schedule that the IC operated forty-five years ago), but I do not recall any other pass in Louisiana with a railroad running through it or across it. From the name, it would be in southern Louisiana, which is not noted for mountain ridges.

I don’t there is anything or anyone friendly in LAJ’s neighborhood.

Johnny, that was a play on words. Cajon (kahon) was misspelled as Cajun (Kayjun). Hence Carl’s reference tro Louisiana

Tom, I do know Cajon (Box) Pass, but not as well as I know Pass Manchac.[:)] I have been over it going between Chicago and Los Angeles and between Salt Lake City and Los Angeles.

Trains June 2008 edition has a very good article on the LAJ (p. 52). It was a little dramatic on the neighborhood problem, but otherwise excellent.

John:

Thanks for sharing the information. I log in this evening.

I read the story a few years ago. That’s why I’m interested in taking a few pictures of the switching operations. The funny thing I threw out the issue years back! [banghead]

I made a typo error! Oh boy![:-^]

Did the article say’s is a bad area? There’s alot of gang activity in LA for sure.

No, it was not a typo; your keyboard did that all on its own, and gave us occasion for a little humor![:)]

Johnny

Here are some other sources of LAJ info:

The Santa Fe Historical & Modeling Society’s Warbonnet magazine (2003, #3) had a very thorough 13-page article on the LAJ. If you can pick up a copy (probably still available from the society), it has more than maybe you’d ever want to know about the LAJ!

Some other sources are Model Railroader (1996, March, p. 84) and Railroad Modeler (1976, December, p. 26).

Good hunting!

Thanks for taking the time and sharing the information. We have five days in California and we want to make sure we cover must of the photo areas.
