M.T.H. HO scale 4-12-2 steam locomotive

You’d think from the cost of this engine that it would use kadee couplers
It appears that the couplers installed are the junk mchenry’s used on many RTR items

BLI can do it,Why can’t MTH?

Great engine but price is high.

I did not know that there was such a locomotive. Very impressive and unique. Great detail and apparently a quality product. I’m 67 and was always going to build that big layout one day but I’ll just have to look at the pictures here and dream. Good review and great photos. Outstanding resolution.

I have a grandson who is a Thomas the Engine and trains in general nut like his grand dad.

Keep up the good work. Your magazine seems to get better and better even in these difficult times. Sometimes I think if we could have more kids involved in something like this hobby they might be less aggressive and less stressed out. They need an outlet for their imaginations too and I think there is a little bit of God in all model railroad people. They can build their own world too.

Like Mr.Heffley stated,I myself didn’t know of such a Locomotive.
I’m also 67 and I am building a layout. As for the review I felt it was very precise and desciptive. I felt like I was there during the rundown. The performance and price point are great. Keep up the good work.

I thought the only remaining 9000 class was number 9000, and located in the Los Angeles area.

This locomotive can be seen in Philadelphia in the FRANKLIN INSTITUTE. To my knowledge the only one still in existence.
It’s number is also 9000!

I’glad to see that DC is still alive

I own this MTH model and Love it more than any other steamer I own. It is a unique model with oustanding features, performance and detail at a reasonable price for the quality. The light effects and smooth running mechanism are fun and the quality control seems to be the best I have encountered so far. The MR reveiw is excellent as always, with good balance and fair observation. MTH usually has good video of their engines in action on their web site and I enjoy the Model Railroader product videos when they are offered. Broadway limited would be another model of choice that is less expensive with great detail, features and function that is approaching MTH competitively but Quality control is still not quite there yet (but good). BLI sells a high volume of product so QA can be a challenge. I have had good service over the phone with both companies.

We all need reading glasses as price is given as $549.00 which seems reasonable, especially since it is NOT brass. After tooling, etc., it is understandable why MTH would make the articulation/rigid frame an option…more sales, and with a choice. Smart marketing. Since I operate on a 1950’s UP layout with friends, I bet somebody will get one of these for the other 40 of us to enjoy!

The Franklin Institute has a 4-10-2 on display, not a 4-12-2…

The 4-12-2 is a big locomotive but not the largest or longest rigid-wheelbase locomotive in the world. The largest on record was the PRR S1 and the longest rigid wheelbase locomotive was the Russian 4-14-2 according to most sources.

The 9000 is certainly my favorite and one is still in existence, if that is what you mean. The 9000 class was very successful also compared to the other two mentioned above.

Thanks

Very nice looking locomotive, however I feel some “creative” marketing is to blam for a mistake in the amont of free rolling cars it can pull. Myself and a fellow club member each own 1 of these and even with the traction tire it comes nowhere near what is described. 60-70 tops. Please do not mistake this for a bashing. It is a top notch model but sometimes mistakes are “bought”

The 4-12-2 is just great! I am a Santa Fe and PRR fan, but I could mot resist the greasley valve gear,l the sound and the power of this UP monster! MTH has done another great work and It is delightful to see it pulling a long string of PFE reefer cars. Although not prototypically correct the MHT model version articulation allowed it to track my 18’’ radius layout without any trouble! for sure it looks much more comfortable at club’s layout with wide radius, but the model is magnificent!
