Maine Cental/ Boston and Maine paint scheme.

Ok heres the problem about 3 weeks ago I bought a N scale Gp7 Maine central, the paint scheme was marron, gold, and black. so in the november issue of mr what do I see a boston and maine with the same scheme. also at the LHS (where i bought the loco) there is a passenger deseal boston and maine with the same scheme! whats up here. I am a big fan of the two roadnames but it is bugging me why they have the same paint schemes[:(!] so whats up?

I think Maine Central and Boston and Maine both folded into Guilford…[?] Or something like that. I know I’ve seen a Maine Central loco with a Guilford paint scheme. Ditto for Boston and Maine.

upscx ,I no the two railroads went into guilford. but these trains were from the fiftys. Guilfords were not around then.

In the 1950’s, Maine Central, Boston & Maine and Portland Terminal had common ownership, so they did indeed share paint schemes. This included the maroon/gold and black/red/white liveries.

That’s kinda what I meant…although I understand why you were confused, trainfreek, as I did not make myself clear. I really meant to say that they had common connections pre-Guilford, but I have had diarrhea of the mouth today.[;)]

B&M and MEC were under common management from about the 30’s (IIRC) until 1953. They shared a common paint scheme until MEC became independent of B&M and MEC started replacing the maroon with green. Some units remained in maroon until the late 60’s or early 70’s. As I recall, there was also at least one F-3 that remained in maroon until it was traded in on a GP-38 in 1966,

Incidentally, the same striping scheme was used on D&RGW (black and yellow) and Lehigh Valley (red and black) early on.

Oh yeah, B&M and MEC power also often ran through between Boston and Bangor so it was possible to see an MEC E-7 at Boston’s North Station or a B&M E-7 in Bangor on such trains as The Gull or Kennebec.

Whoa! What happened to my post! I made the first post about common ownership and now its gone! Actually, the NH had aquired control of the B&M, MEC, and PT. When NH lost control, the ties stayed.

Could you link me to your website?

thanks for all the replies. andre in ho i have a gp38 that is gold. atlas called it harvest gold it also has a green roof .

o, I see the link now. Thanks

Andre, really? Thanks for the correct answer. That seems much more plausible. Still, just so ya know, NH did acquire control for a few months

That’s the late scheme. MEC actually had several paint schemes and a number of one off schemes (e.g. RS-2 #554 in solid green with a yellow cab).
