Hello everyone I have a question on technique. As you know old windows in old buildings tend to get foggy after time due to not cleaning and what not. I was wondering if anyone here knows the best way to make this look realistic. I was thinking either lightly sanding the “glass” or painting it a grey/white color or a combo of both. Also what works best doing it on the inside or on the outside. If there is another totally different way to get this effect please let me know.
Your best bet is sanding the windows alittle bit. Here’s a pointer. Do not sand in circles otherwise it looks a bit goofy on the window. Sand straight up and down. Paint won’t make it look as good. But when your done sanding you can dry brush on some paint to look like dust.
Try spraying the inside of the window with Dullcoat, which tends to fog clear styrene. You could also try coating the windows with CA, which nearly always fogs cleat styrene.
You can apply some “magic” transparent tape to the inside of the window glass. I’ve also used black electrical tape to block out windows in lighted buildings, to simulate a darkened room.
I would spray the Dullcote on the outside of the windows, otherwise you’re still going to get a shiny look from the clear plastic. Either that or spray both sides.
cool thanks for the different tricks I will try them. I never even thought of using the cloudy colored scotch tape that is just the look I was wanting I am going to see how that turns out first. Thanks again guys
Try using plastic milk cartons, the 1/2 gallon size, cut out the flat sides and replace clear styrene with carton plastic. Also, won’t liquid styrene cement, brushed on clear styrene turn it opaque?
