curious if these are compatible pieces??? what would be the differences?
(I’m not even certain if Roco is the correct spelling) they look similar in pictures, at least to my untrained eye - but I haven’t been able to figure out about the couplers yet.

Depends on what you mean by compatible. I think the rolling stock is all compatible. I have some Roco, Marklin, and Piko and all use the European hook and loop coupler. The coupler boxes seem to be standard, so I’ve replaced the couplers with Kadee #18s.
Locomotives, though, are another story. I believe Marklin uses a three-rail ac system for their locomotives, but they do make some 2-rail dc for use with other equipment. Roco and the other makers mostly have 2-rail dc locomotives, but they make some 3-rail ac equipment to run on Marklin layouts. Be sure to check before buying a locomotive!

Gary, You are very correct, I’ve been collecting and operating
arklin and Roco for more than 30 years and as you said Roco is generally 2 rail while Marklin is AC/3rail. While the loco’s won’t operate on the others track system, Roco’s rolling stock will work on Marklins track but not vise versa unless you chg out the wheel sets on the Marklin so that they’re insolated from each side as with the Roco product[:)]
Thanks guys. Since I’m looking at some interesting rolling stock and not engines, there shouldn’t be a problem. Optimistically, and somewhat predictably, I knew that Emeraldisle would reply (anything Marklin) - and I’m glad you did. I’ve been bitten by the Marklin bug.
