Soooooooooooooooo…
I was going to lay some turnouts & track down on my 2" foam, but I wanted to paint under the turnouts so I wouldn’t have to deal with pink coming through the points while ballasting later.
So gave each section a shot of Krylon Flat Black.
And proceeded to watch as it melted the foam.
Now, I had sprayed on a test piece, & it worked fine.
Perhaps because I had laid down cork with caulk, & then tore it up, and it reacted with the laytex caulk residue left on the foam?
Hmmm…
So now, what’s a good way to fill in a slightly eaten away chunk of foam on which I need to lay track?
I’m thinking some spackle? or thinish plaster that I can pour & level?
It’s a rather small area: about 1/8" (give or take the eating) directly under where the turnouts are supposed to go.
Joint compound would do the trick and some of the non chemical adhesives such as latex liquid nails or Loctite Power grab for foamboard will fill in the erosions and then sanded flat. I use only acyrlic paints for the foamboard. Krylon or Rustoleum make some spray paints in a latex compound.
Acryllic seems the way to go.
Further investigation reveals it’s not the Krylon & the foam, it’s the Krylon & the acryllic caulk that melts the foam.
Will be getting some acryllic paint to color under the turnouts from now on.
Cheers!

Latex caulk should work, smooth it with a damp sponge. I decided to prime any area with basic earth color latex that were going to be painted with a suspect paint. No problems.
