Metra announces Chicago-Waukegan "Sunrise Express"

Lake County now has more people commuting into its borders for work than heading out to jobs elsewhere.

Following a lobbying effort by local officials and businesses, Metra is recognizing that trend with a new early-morning reverse-commute train from downtown Chicago to Waukegan.

The Sunrise Express will make its inaugural voyage on the UP North Line Monday, April 2.

The train will leave Ogilvie Transportation Center weekdays at 5:40 a.m. and head north, with Lake county stops including Highland Park, Lake Forest, Lake Bluff, Great Lakes, and North Chicago before pulling into Waukegan at 6:48 a.m.

Designed primarily to get Cook County commuters to job destinations in Lake County earlier in the morning, the new train was established following a two-year effort spearheaded by State Rep. Susan Garrett, D-Lake Forest.
