Metrolink to offer new weekend service to Riverside, may discontinue San Bernardino trains
I assume the 91 line will provide weekend service to Perris once the Perris Valley line is completed. There has been a lot of progress on the new line along the I-215.
Why doesn’t Metrolink consider some kind of service from Los Angeles to Palm Springs, Ca.? At least on Friday through Sunday. Seems like this could be popular.
The loss of the late night (M-F) train on the San Bernardino line would be a significant one. That would make the 9:30 p.m. train the last one of the day, and would put a crimp on scheduling business and social activities in the suddenly booming downtown Los Angeles.
And how about they consider extending service to Palm Springs and Indio?
Considering that the trains start in Riverside and travel TO Los Angeles in the morning and TO Riverside in the afternoon/evening, the traffic pattern from Perris would be FROM Perris to LA in the morning and back in the afternoon/evening.
I imagine SCRRA has to deal with the U P and I don’t Uncle Pete would be a willing partner.
Service to Palm Springs and Indio is part of a proposed intercity Coachella Valley service. We’ll see if union Pacific will cooperate or not on that one. Eliminating the San Bernardino-Riverside leg on weekend and introducing this new service will allow Riverside passengers to get quicker to Los Angeles. As for the late night train eliminations, they ought to at least retain that service on weekends, or run a late outbound evening special for sporting events or on days of other public festivities shortly after the conclusion of those events.
