Just received November TRAINS and not a word about the disgraceful exit, in the face of great demand, of the Mexican passenger business! Mexicans have far fewer cars, worse roads, and demand for service was always strong. Just because it can’t “make money” is no reason for stopping a needed public service, in Mexico nor here in US. And it’s much more needed in Mexico! I think we all applauded when Vincente Fox was elected but this is carrying ‘free enterprise’ much too far. How about a follow-up in TRAINS ?

I was wondering the same thing, why no mention of the passenger train situation? A lot of South America is in the same boat the trains were canceled, even though they had high ridership and a definite social need. In many of these countries the roads are deplorable , so highway transport is poor also. So by eliminating the passenger train they really hindered progress. The best bet would be to have private companies run the passenger service with a partial government service if profits are unatainable. How does KCS make out with its Panama passenger train? Is this a money maker or not?
