Michigan Central Station - Detroit

Got this photo in my FB feed. Reads like MC station was in far worse condition than I originally thought…

You never know until you dig into the project.

I was a restoration and preservation architect for many years. All the buildings I was ever involved with that stood empty for any length of time were pretty much like this.

I wonder if this included damage to the Roosevelt Park Annex post office across the street. They were connected by a tunnel, which always had standing water in it, when I worked there. When the facility caught fire, the rails. etc, of the elevators were warped, so most school supplies were just left there, since there wasn’t any economical way to remove anything from anywhere but the main floor.

As someone who lives in Metro Detroit. The MC building was certainly in a extremely poor state.. All my years passing by the building on I-75, I never thought it would get revived. Floors, and ceiling’s collapsed, all the windows busted out, parts of the building were also damaged by arson over the years…

I toured the former station with the NHRS convention in Michigan last summer. It certainly was an impressive restoration, and they are planning to put a hotel in upper floors that were never used as office space when it was still owned by NYC. It’s sad that the former station platform area will be developed for other purposes, and if passenger service ever returns to that line segment, it will be across the street.
