I was jsut wondering who here uses microsoft’s train simulator and wha tadd in tracks you all like. I currently have Cascade’s Crossing and Full Bucket Line and love em.
I don’t own a simulator, but I was just thinking the other night how cool it would be if someone would come up with a 3-D layout simulator for people that either don’t have the room, money or skill to build an actual layout. They could sit down and design their layout, put in buldings and so forth then pick their engines and rolling stock they wanted to run on it. If they got tired of it, they could delete it and build a new one… I know, dumb idea. I’ll shut up.

The people who made “TRAINZ” didnt think it was a dumb idea. Thats what that is and it has sold more copies than train simulator

You can go and download a trail versions of either one. There was an artical a few months ago on both of them in either MRR or Model Railroad Craftsman. I have also seen and used them both. In my opinion and also in MRR they are both crap. They gave both of them thumbs down., and I agree. If you are looking for something to simulate a layout then neither one of these even comes close. Let me look for the book and will give you who they chose is the best.
Thanks JPM335. That’s really cool. But what I was talking about would be a 3-D layout simulator where you design your own layout from the ground up. You would lay the track the way you wanted it, pick the landscape, add the buildings, trees, lakes, etc. Then pick the engines and rolling stock you wanted to run. What I’m talking about may not exist for years to come-if ever. (Hope a designer is reading this…)

Thats what TRAINZ is. You start with a flat landscape and lay your track, make scenery and all that. then you get to run trains.
As mentioned, there is “Trainz”. It caters more to the model railroad side of simulation rather than prototype.
There is also “Microsoft Train Simulator”. MSTS, as it’s called, attempts to simulate the actual aspects of the prototype more so than the model railroad aspect. (i.e. The actual physics of railroading.)
I don’t have the figures on Trainz, but MSTS has sold nearly 1,000,000 copies. There is an entire community devoted to it and literally thousands upon thousands of add-ons.

I am a MSTS user. I enjoy a very special retail add in which features the NYC 4-6-4 steam locomotive and the Desiel set.
I also have the sandpatch grade.
Frusterations with failing to enter a server becuase it is “Busy” try again later attempting to download engines, cars etc for free pretty much shelved my MSTS journey.
I plan to sell them on ebay in the future.
I feel that generation of games related to trains while pretty good, lacks intelligence.
For example:
When backing off a throttle in a steam engine in preparation for a station stop the computer should quiet the steam chuff sound to reflect the amount of power. Not play .wav files according to speed level in endless loops.
I would have recomended TRAINZ but someone got to you first, but MSTS is better for scenarios just so you know.
Where would i go to get a cheap train designer, and add ons, preferably avalible in europe.
Not a stupid idea the guy from what my dad told me ,that made the 1st steam engine was a guy who wanted to get stock to 1 point to another and layed track with a boiler run ,wheels ,and there we went

Historic Rail has it in their catalog for $39.95 (Trainz Railroad Simulator 2004) . Best Buy or Comp USA should also have it. Got mine from Comp USA when it was first released. They’re many downloadable routes,locos,rolling stock,buildings,scenery,scenarios,etc from Auran’s site and many independent sites.
Service packs and other needed stuff is available as free downloads from Auran also.
