Mineral spirits with enamel paints

Recently, I thought i’d get into airbrushing with a Paasche H, and a majority of my paints are enamels (assorted Testors, Model Master, Scalecoat and Floquil). When I clean out my airbrush, can I use mineral spirits if i’m using enamels? I’d rather be using my Testors enamel thinner just for thinning enamels instead of using it to also clean out my airbrush, simply because it can be costly after a while and I want something I can get locally without having to make special trips to my LHS.

It would probably work ok, but I’d recommend getting a cheap can of laquer thinners for cleaning your gun. Stronger than mineral spirits and will clean up a lot quicker.

I agree with Mark, get some laquer thinner for clean up, use mineral spirits for thinning. Testors thinner is essentially the same thing as mineral spirits and is a lot cheaper (you can buy it by the quart) than the Testors stuff.

I agree with the suggestion to use lacquer thinner for clean-up, but you may also want to try it as a thinner. I’ve used lacquer thinner for that purpose with all sorts of Testors non-acrylic paints for many years, with good results.
I also use it for clean-up (brushes and airbrush) when using acrylic paints.

AND-----it makes an excelent cement for styrene as well as a good track cleaning fluid if you don’t over do it.

I’ve been using lacquer thinner for thinning, cleaning airbrushes, & glu

ing styrene for years. BUT the “new, safe” stuff from Home Depot will hardly melt styrene & takes a while to mix into paint…also doesn’t smell like lacquer thinner.
