Does anyone in the KC area know where the good (real) model railroad shops are? Something other than your basic hobby shop staffed with kids and shelves full of RC cars?
We used to have DTC (Destination Train Center) in Lenexa, but the owner closed shop and moved to Chicago!
I almost forgot… if you’ll be in town on Jan. 15-16, you might want to go to the Great American Train Show at the American Royal Complex, in downtown KC.
I’ll [#ditto] that. This is the BEST place for HO or N scale and scratch building supplies. Plus the guy who owns/runs the place is a serious HO model railroader himself. He is knowledgable about model railroading, especially in HO or N, and is very friendly and helpful. He is glad to answer your questions and his info will be helpful!!!
There was a good shop up on the north side in a little town near riverside…Parkview ? Parldale ? Can’t remember the name of the place but there are other businesses in the old building. I have not been in there in a long spell and moved from KC 4 years ago so it might have changed.
Doc’s Caboose is located 1400 Union Avenue, KC, MO. It is located in the West Bottoms, trackside on UP corridor. www.docscaboose.com I think they they deal in mrr only.
I have not been to this place, but I have heard it is a good place to shop. I am going to be in KC for the GATS show this Saturday and plan to stop by this place and check it out. The shop in Parkview that slotracer mention above is good too. Strictly MRR and excellent in carrying and working with DCC. There isn’t much that this guy doesn’t have in stock. I can’t remember the name either, but it is on the main drag at the top of a hill on the west side of the road.
I went to the GATS show in KC today and stopped by Don’c Caboose. I talked to Doc himself and was fairly impressed with the shop and very impressed with the knowledge and helpfulness of the owner. This is only one meeting, but I would say this is a great place to do business.
I realize that this is an old post but it does keep showing up on a Google search for "Train Store Kansas City’. In case anyone sees this I’d like to point out that there is a new train store (opened June 12, 2010) called Fred’s Train Shop located in Overland Park, KS (7327 W. 80th St) that carries all scales of model trains from Z to G. Check out the web site at http://www.fredstrainshop.com. The web site is still a work in progress but it will give you some additional information about the store. The information is:
Address: 7327 W. 80th St., Overland Park, KS 66204
Phone: 913-383-3500
Store Hours:
Tues.-Fri. 10am-6pm
Sat. 9am-5pm
Sun.-Mon. CLOSED
I highly recommend Show Me Lines on Main St. in Grandview. Charlie has an extensive inventory, and he and his staff are valuable resources for modeling knowledge.
I used to go to Fred’s Train Shop in Overland Park, KS. I don’t think they have anything but trains. Real friendly people who will help you out and get what you need.
I think they also do custom finishing/painting if you so desire, but I don’t know what their rates are.
The very best train shop in Kansas City is Doc’s Caboose. It’s at 1400 Union Ave. in the West Bottoms. What they don’t have, they can get for you. Here’s a link to Doc’s website: http://www.docscaboose.com/
