I model in N gauge and want to model a vineyard. I have made the arbors already out of leftovers from some kits. What suggestions do folks have on how to model the vines and the grape clusters hanging from them?
Busch makes grape vines in HO. Not sure about N.

I’ll be very interested in the responses. I am planning a branch line off my Class 1 main line and one of the main customers on this branch is going to be a winery.
Jeff,
I did a search at the Index of Magazines, using “grape vines” as the keyword term. No results. Ditto for “vineyard.” However, a search on “vine”:
http://index.mrmag.com/tm.exe?opt=S&cmdtext=vine&MAG=ANY&output=3&sort=A
yielded 9 article citations. Perhaps some of the cited articles will have the answer.

I too would be very interested in info about vineyards, as I live in a fine wine making area of NY State. In fact a bunch of grapes will be on the logo of the Seneca Lake, Ontario, and Western. I plan to put a winery somewhere on the layout. Have to do some research as to what would have been around here in 1925…
Howmus,
I don’t know if this how to let you know how I’m doing in creating a vineyard, but here goes. I made the arbors from some left over pieces that are U shaped from the Walther’s lumber yard kit, but you could make the arbors from some scale lumber from your hobby shop or through Micro-Mark. After the U’s were glued together, about 5/8" apart (definitely not to scale but I’m not to worried about that) to two long horizontal top pieces of lumber, I first took some Woodland Scenics poly fiber, stretched it out and glued it on top. Already it looked great. Then sprinkled a couple of colors of fine ground foam on that and set it with diluted matte medium. The grape clusters are the challenge. What I am experimenting with is taking 3/16" clear stickum discs (found at Becker’s Teacher and Parent supply store, but probably also at any good stationary supply store), cutting these in half, and rolling these small pieces in the lavender color foam from the Spring Flowers selection available from Scenic Express… This results in some very small purple clusters. I am now at the stage where I have to figure out how to “hang” these clusters downward on the underside of the arbor. It will be tedius work! That is where I am right now. I also need to find some deeper purple paint for the clusters as the lavender foam is not quite the color needed. But ovrall, I know this is going to look pretty sharp! I am making a custom billboard (from Blair Line) with the name of the winery (in honor of a friend) and will have it mounted on the high side of the valley where the veneyard is. I will also light the billb
Jeff,
Based on Lane Stewart’s article:
Spice up tour produce stand: modeling with herbs & spices Narrow Gauge & Short Line Gazette, May/June 1996, page 74 ( FRUIT, PRODUCE, STAND, “STEWART, LANE”, NGSL )
in the NG&SLG, you might want to try spray painting some mustard seeds to simulate grapes. Might be easier than making stickum disc “spit balls.” (On second thought, since you’re working in N scale they might be too large.)
