Modeling barbed wire fence

Does anybody out there have any great ideas about modeling barbed wire fence in HO scale? I’m thinking about the type of fence one would see around large prairie pastures in Kansas and Nebraska.

There is a British company that makes barb wire, if I find the link I will post it. Also, I’ve seen folks tie knots into thread at regualr intervals (spacing of the barbs) that looks very good. THe thinner the thread the better.

I have several barbed wire fences on my layout. I use thread and small finishing nails. I paint the ‘‘posts’’ orange with a silver top to represent a ‘‘T’’ post. I suppose you could use a brown thread to make a rusted fence.

Welcome to the forum. I have been researching this for a year. There was a long thread a year ago. I have found nothing that looks good in HO. I will monitor this thread to see if you do any better.

On my granddaughter’s diorama, she used black sewing thread and it looks pretty good. All the military stuff I found was way too large and out of scale.

Just by pure dumb luck [%-)] I was going thru my removable disk for some files and found the web link I was looking for about the barb wire.

Find the thinnest nylon sewing thread you can find in a rail brown/old rust color, add a little flat black to it, and add it to poles of your choosing. Do realize that barbs on bob’war fences are just about 1/2" long, or too small to see in HO…

If you can see the “barbs” or even the fence wire on HO scale, it’s far too large, and not “prototypical” just put in some of the thinnest thread or wire in the world and let the cows figure out where the “barbs” are.

I’ve got some .005" clear nylon thread. If you tie granny knots in it, they kind of look like barbs. But your talking about a lot of knots and trying to get them spaced evenly. MR did a fence in the latest issue of Realistic Layouts with 3 strands of “unbarbed” barbed wire at the top and you really couldn’t notice.
