From what I understand Kato makes models of SD80macs which are essentially the same locomotive as a SD90mac although you’ll have to paint it in UP colors. I’m pretty sure they make an undecorated one. As for taking 18" curves I’d say that’s not happening though.
Thank you for replying so quickly and for the information. Will they take a 22" radius curve? And does anyone know a website that sells kato locomotives and has this sort of information in their desciption because their website is really s l o w. Oh and I forgot to mention that this is for ho scale.
Kato does make an sd90/43, yes they make one undecorated and in up clothing. As for the rest of your questions, you should be able to get it under $200. I have one and have’nt applied paint to it yet, I won mines off of ebay for a $100. And yes they make it ho scale !
KATO does/did make an HO SD90/43MAC and in UP colors, as well as undecorated. You might have to look around some to find any available or try…darn I say…EBay. The last few I’ve seen have gone for well under $200, more in the $120 range.
They take 24" well and can negotiate 22 and perhaps smaller, short yard trackage curves at slow speeds. They can negotiate #4 switches at moderate scale speeds and #6’s at speed.
They are heavy and pull well, but despite their size they don’t have much extra room under the shell for decoders. They are DCC ready and have an eight pin plug, plan on using a small decoder such as a 15 series NCE, Digitrax DH123 or 163 or MRC 1650 or 1651. A small sound decoder such as an MRC mini brillance will fit, with the smaller speaker. The units have the bright white leds for lighting.
