Modified Atlas Norfolk Southern GP38

I got this loco a while back, before sound was installed in Gold Series to do a project based on a photo in a book I have. In 1975 the Southern Railway acquired a small short line named the Norfolk Southern. Several of their locos were non dynamic braked GP38’s which were immediately shopped to add the high short hood and apparently they were needed in service before the Southern Tuxedo could be applied. I chopped off the top of the short hood and added a Cannon & Co. High short hood grafted just like the real deal.

What, no comments? This loco is the real deal not an imaginary what if. Look here at the prototype.

Well ok then, would you prefer to be boiled in olive or corn oil?[:-^] Seriously, it looks a nice job. Do you intend to continue and primer the high hood and change the road number? I don’t seem to recall seeing any other pics of the road that oddly predicted the future in its’ name. J.R.

I have painted the number board black and put shell scale decals 2001 on it. I intend to leave it pretty much as is other than that. There are a few other pictures and apparently they ran this way for a few weeks.

Nice job then recreating an obscure bit of history. I model further north, but the whole history thing and mergers is a great read, though from your modelling focus you may not be thrilled about the outcome. J.R…

That actually looks kinda cool. Nice job!

BTW, the Norfolk Southern was actually considered a small Class 1.

Very nice work, Bob!

I enjoy seeing custom projects like these. Really gets the brain rolling.

Would you be willing to post a parts list? I have some extra GP-38s and would like to convert one as you have done with yours.

Nice job Bob. I’m a fan of that railroad as well. I don’t know specifically about the 2001 or 2002, but several ex Norfolk & Southern gp38’s are still running around I think, and got re-chopped when they were sold off.

The greening of your layout looks to be progressing well also.

Have you considered putting on the correct fuel tank? That is a major spotting feature.

I’ll put together a parts list but there wasn’t that much too it. A cannon & co. high short hood kit, A pair of 3 chime horns all forward, southern style sun shades(not on the model when the photo was taken), a southen style bell for the long end and grab irons for the new high nose.

The fuel tank is the one that came with the model and I hadn’t noticed it was wrong and if replacing it requires cutting the chassis it will have to stay wrong.
