Moon train...

Does anyone recall the commercial several years ago that showed a high speed bullet type train moving along at about 300 mph across the surface of the moon ?. I’m sure they’ll actually have something like that one of these days in the distant future to take people from one moon base to another. Too bad none of use will still be around to see it ([V])…

Do you happen to recall the Model Railroader article many years ago that featured
a lunar railroad. Someone actually did a module with futuristic track and equipment,
all in a lunar landscape. I can’t recall when that article came out, but it was more
than 20 years ago, but very well done. The module actually made the cover.

I will have loved to see that thing

No, I guess I missed that one GN-Rick. I do recall someone here on the forum several months ago talking about someone they knew that had built a Mars layout with a futuristic train on it that was inspired by the movie Total Recall.

Yes, it was the April fools issue ummm maybe 1978?

My son had a Mars module, with a farm and a working vespine gas “mine”.

Texas Zepher is correct that the article was intended as an April Fools prank by the MR staff. However, it was run as a full and detailed article in the main portion of the magazine. It even included concepts for track and rolling stock. The article was so we done that several hobbyist apparently took it seriously and built examples…one being a science fair winner, as I recall!

Notice to future posters of this topic. Please be sure and include the word “recall” at least once in your reply… We all did.

I had to recall the earlier posts in this thread, to see if Tracklayer was correct…oops…Budliner missed!!

I have a bunch of back issues of Model Railroader, and if I recall correctly[:)], it was on the front cover. I’l dig them up and let you guys know.

Dang sure did!. Shame on you Budliner…

I wouldn’t say that NONE of us will live to see such a thing–frankly I hope to see such a thing in my lifetime, and assuming a relatively normal lifespan of another 40-50 years I wouldn’t rule it out. Plus there are youngsters on this forum who may well be around another 80 years or more, especially if lifespans keep stretching from new health technologies. I suppose I’d prefer to think of a future where such things do happen rather than otherwise.

Of course, there is no reason why a high-speed train on the moon would have to be bullet-shaped–there is no atmosphere, and thus no need for an aerodynamically shaped train!

I have that MR. It is neat and inspiring, and shows just how far freelancing a model railroad can go!

Don’t count your chickens, Jetrock! Man went from the first Earth-orbiting satellites to the final manned moon landing in less than 20 years. Now its been 30 years since we were there last and we no longer even have the hardware capable of putting a man on the moon! I suspect it will be a very long time before even primitive colonies are established on Luna…and longer yet before they need any inter-colony transportation.

it would be cool to see trains on the moon.

If we cannot model a train on the moon we can at least model that annual scene in California where a large crowd of folks moon an Amtrak train. I do not recall seeing that in Model Railroader or RMC. Sounds like a photo contest winner to me.
Or perhaps Model Railroad Planning should feature the prototype research that would be needed …

I love it, Dave!

I remember seeing an article about that Amtrak “mooning” tradition. I bet a model pic of that scene would really be ‘asstounding’ !!

[:D][:O]

All I want to know is whether the locomotive on the “moon train” was equipped with a Mars light?

I’m glad to see at least one person out there has faith in the medical world. I personally don’t because I’ve spent THOUSANDS of dollars trying to cure my minor health problems with no results what so ever… I’m just one of those unlucky people that can’t take medications without becoming violently ill.

As for the bullet shape design. Your absolutely right. There’s no need for it on the moon due to lack of atmosphere, but you have to admit, it would “look” cool and futuristic.
