Once again, it seems like I have disappearing posts. [?]
Why?
Seems it only happens on these forums. [banghead]

What did you post?
What was the theme?
What was the Title?
(Did you use forbidden language?)
Are you talking about older posts? I got an email indicating that the old $1200 Athearn SD45 thread was deleted while Bergie was doing some housecleaning. I guess they’re freeing up some server space.
Rotor,
Not knowing your details, I can only offer speculation. It’s possible that your post(s) were “daughtered” to another post (or posts) that was deleted from a thread.
To explain further, if you click the button to any post in a thread, your post is now “daugthered” (or an offspring) to that particular post. If that post is deleted for whatever reason, your post - even if there may be nothing wrong with it’s content - will inadvertently be deleted, as well. From the software, there is NO way to know who’s posts are daughtered to which posts in a thread. Unfortunately, it happens and is unavoidable.
Again, Rotor, without details that’s my only explanation for you.
Tom
I only see two ways of replying to a thread. You either hit the “Reply” button, or the “Quote” button. Wouldn’t that make EVERY post after the original post in a thread a daughter to the one above it or the one it’s quoting?
Maybe I’m misunderstanding…or maybe there’s more buttons there that I can’t see, on any of the 7-8 computers with different ISP’s and operating systems?
It depends on whose post you hit the reply button in. Since I hit reply to pcarrell’s post, if it gets deleted so does mine. If he hit reply on someone else’s post and that post is deleted then his gets deleted and so does mine.
If you want to aoid getting deleted, reply to the first post in the thread.
Enjoy
Paul
I just clicked on the reply button on Paul’s post above this one, and it is now daughtered to his. If his post were to be deleted for cause, mine will go by design. This is because flame wars sometimes erupt in forums everywhere, but not until some posts have generated them. The moderator will delete the progenitor, that is the offending post, and all others will go at the same time.
For the more forum-savvy, if you suspect a flame is underway, go up to the originator’s first statement and reply to that.
Well how about that! I learned something new!
Thanks!
You learn something new every day.
Would I be correct to presume that granddaughters and great granddaughters and so on would also be deleted?
Mark
I posted 7 posts in Forum Testing then ran the following test scenario to see what would happen:
Here’s what I found out:
When Post 2 was deleted, ONLY Posts 2 & 3 disappeared. This left:
When Post 6 was deleted, ONLY Post 6 disappeared. This left:
So, it looks like a reply (Post 4) to a quoted post (Post 3) is NOT affected, even though the quoted post (Post 3) is deleted.
Hopefully that makes things a little clearer. I’ve learned something new.
Tom
Yea, verily unto the 7th generation.
Andre
Yes, and when the geeks who design this sort of software get into the 21st Century, they’ll equalize their currently biased use of language to reflect that the odd son and subsequent male progeny can also be ash-canned.
[:-,]
Scenario #2:
Post 1
Post 2 - Reply to Post 1
Post 3 - Reply to Post 2
Post 4 - Reply to Post 3
Post 5 - Reply to Post 3
Post 6 - Reply to Post 5
Post 7 - Reply to Post 6
Effects:
When Post 3 was deleted, the following posts remained…
Conclusion:
ONLY 2nd generation (daughter) posts of deleted 1st generation (parent) posts seem to be affected. 3rd generation+ (granddaugther, great granddaughter, etc.) are NOT affected by the deletions.
Did I overlook a scenario I should have included?
Tom
You guys are killing my post count!
At this rate, I’ll never catch Selector!
