I’m considering buying a G scale starter train as a gift for my father who is continually relandscaping his yard and who loves model trains (though he doesn’t currently own one). I myself know nothing about model trains. Are some brands more reliable than others? I’ve seen a Bachmann set I’m interested in, but have doubts about its reliability after searching the net. Any recommendations?
You get what you pay for. LGB is far superior in quality to Bachmann, but it is also far higher in price. You can get a Bachmann train set for the price of an LGB car. The new Bachmann large scale geared locomotives are excellent, but they are as high priced as LGB.
LGB is by far the best. I have owned both and the adage "you get what you pay for " applies.
Hi Tracerj, I owned LGB purchased in the 1980s and early 1990s, all made in Germany, and found all excellent quality. Owned a few Bachmann pieces at the same time, made in China, and were not suitable for outdoors. Roger D.
