Mountains and Tunnels-- fast

So have you heard this before !!?? How to make mountain scenery, really low cost and for newbies, this might amount to A MOUNTAIN !![:D]

Here goes, I found these methods to work for me so maybe they’ll work for you too.

1.) Plain brown paper bags from the grocery store work best as they don’t cost anything ! And when you get the groceries put away, save the bags until you have about enough of them to make mountains all over your layout.

2.) Use styrofoam pieces to make a form, building the pieces up in layers held together with toothpicks dipped in wood glue, these make great " nails" and really hold things together. And don’t forget tunnels, use the same method by placing two up-right styrofoam pieces and one of the inner- roof of the tunnel, this should resemble a three-sided box. Be sure to allow for clearences for locos and the longest cars, especially around curves. The lenghth and width of tunnels is determined by your designs of your layout.

Cut out the large parts of the bags and crumple them up, simple…then spread the section out to fit an area about 1 sq ft and wet the section with water and Elmers wood glue. Then place these sections over the crumpled up newspaper you have been saving up as well which you attach to the styrofoam with wood glue as well. The result is what you shape the bag and newspaper sections to look like.

The basic painting can be done with water-based paint and water and all of this mixed with acrylic caulk to make a paste can be applied to the paper bag surface to strengthen the paper. After an hour or so the paper becomes very hard and easily painted, maybe with an airbrush. Several layers of this paste will stiffen the paper and then you could apply dirt and other details.

I made a section for a second tunnel in this manner. There are many ways to accompli***his but
