Building my first rolling stock kit (intermountain 40ft) and see that I have the option to mount the coupler either on the truck or the car itself…which is better? Limitations of each?
On the car, for sure.
I wouldn’t think that Intermountain would even have this option. Body mounted.

on the car, you have less chance to pull the wheels off the track

The origin of truck mounted couplers was an early compromise for the sharp train set curves, which is pretty much the only advantage of them to this day. For a 40 scale foot long car, body mounted should be just fine unless you’re planning on running them on a radius sharper than about 18 inches.
He’s got to be N scale because Intermountain would not truck mount in HO
