MOW Vehicles - Bachman/Herpa/Walthers (pics)

Somebody awhile back was asking about the Bachman Rail Detector truck and if it was a decent model. I said I’d post pics of the one I had modified. Threw a couple of other vehicles in, too.

Unit no longer operates. And when it did, calling it “operational” is kind to say the least!

Truck is a kitbash of the Walthers Line Truck body with a Matchbox Aux Light truck front.

Out of the box Herpa dump truck, weathered slightly, a couple of yellow lights on the dump box and decaled.

Sweet models[8D] I have a few of those auxillary trucks in my matchbox collection, i might try that.

Very Nice!

Rocky, that first photo…Do you know what year that van is? I might be able to use it.
I’ve been wanting M.O.W vehicles from the past, say 1950s thru 60s. So their is a glimmer of hope! Most of the MOW items I’ve seen are modern.

I’ll probably wind up getting some step vans and pick up trucks from that time period…and whip out the ol’ airbrush and decal sets!

Cheers.

Maintenance vehicle are a very important part of railroad operation. The Ceder Branch and Wester recently acquired its first two. Three more are in the paint shop.

I’ve enjoyed working on this aspect of my railroad. Mx vehicles seem to give the railroad its own personality.

What do you guys use for the lowering rail wheels on the trucks? Do you need to scratchbuild them, or does someone make a kit so you can make any vehicle a MoW vehicle?

Antonio: Can’t help you with the year, although, I know this particular model has been on the market since at least 1988, but I think it came out before that. Maybe even late 70’s. My guess, as it appears to be a close kin to the Metro step-van, I think late 60’s is pretty do-able for you.

trainfreak: The van rail wheels came with the vehicle. On the crane truck, those came with a Woodland Scenics kit of some kind I had in the spares box. Go to the Walthers catalog, “Parts” section. I think Details West or Details Assoc has them, as I know I need some more, for a couple of other trucks.

dragenrider: Nice pics and models! I like the tanker. Looks like the old EKO truck. I have one somewhere kitbashed as a fire tanker.

I’m sorry, I couldn’t find anything on Walther’s website about the hy-rail wheels. And I guess I should have said that I would need them in N scale, which probalby makes them non-existant, and forcing me to scratchbuild them.

How would I go about doing that in N scale? Has anyone done it?

Hy rail sets are details west part #235-918
here is what it looks like!

Ihave also scratch biult hy rail bumpers using Nscale wheel sets. Check out my link to see more pics!
