MP36

Hi all, i have a question about converting an F59 to an MP36 since there in similar shape.

1: Can it be done

2:How hard will it be

3:How?

4: Would it be easier to scratch-build

In the magazine RailRoad Model Craftsman, there were blueprints (dimentions) for the MP36, so i would go from there if i were to scratchbuild

Thanks
Colin

For those of us with no idea what he’s talking about…

Pweddy paint scheme. Looks liek if you start with an F40PH (or the engine behind, can’t tell if it;'s a 40 or a 45) shell for the back. It can be done, depending on your skillz. I;d suggesttaking and fudging around with construction paper, then styrene. Cut the back off of a 45 and the 59, then attach 45’s butt to 59;s head and work from there.

That;s a simplified version, if you want a more accruate, I’m of no help

Ok thanks for the advice! But wouldnt I have to modify the F59s nose? How would I do that Heated curved edge? Also what could I use for the lower body ( trucks, fuel tank…etc)

Thanks

Colin

  1. I;m no expert, sorry if you take me as one. Just good at coming up with overwhelming projects. Not suure how many commuter modellers there are here now.

Teh F 59 could make use of a curved window edge to trick the eye into thinking it’s different? the roof cowling could probably be made with styrene using the plans from the RMC. the 36 appears to have a more sloped down curve that points down, where the 59 beaks, so you might carefully sand that down. Drilling some larger headlight holes might get you closer too For reference, here’s side diagrams of the 59, 36, and the P32, which has what looks like an elongated body of the 36. Still looking for plans to the FP 45, and the F40PH

Time for me to hit the sack. Good luck with further

EDIT: Hmm. looks definately like you’ll need a longer body than the 59. You might try the P32’s body. :chinstroke:

The EMD F59PHI is about 58’ long. The MPI MP36 is 68’ long. This is due to the F59PHI using a 12 cylinder 710 engine, and the MP36 uses a 16 cylinder 645 engine in it for starters. The MPI line can also have a 16 cylinder 710 engine, as well as seperate HEP engines or get HEP from a shaft attached static invertor. Allowing for these options, MPI has a longer common frame.

The basic car body appears to be different and I suspect styrene would be the best material to start with. You might be able to salvage some grills/grids from the F59PHI, but you will need to splice the frame to increase the wheelbase to start with.

IMPERIAL HOBBY PRODUCTIONS Has just announced the MP36 in HO scale as a compleat resign kit http://ihphobby.tripod.com/index.html mike

RMC had an article, and drawings in their March (I think) issue on the MP36. There ewere also some suggestions on how to kitbash one too.
