The Trains news release on the MP40 indicates that the new GO Transit MP40s are equipped with GPS.
Why does a commuter locomotive need GPS? Has there been a problem with GO Transit trains getting lost in the past? (GO train pulls over to the side of the tracks, window rolls down, engineer leans out, "Hey, Buddy… which way to Toronto?)
Most locomotives have GPS recievers/transmitters and uplinks these days its not for Engineers benefit but for train tracking and maintenace, all Amtrak locomotives for example show show on big master map in their headquarters showing location, speed, fuel amount, engine health etc.
Its probably similar to the OnStar commercial where the woman gets diagnostic checks zapped to her laptop in the comfort of her patio chair while her car is parked in the driveway.
