Hi, I’ve got a spare GP-7 body. I’ve seen GP38 frames (vintage 2006, complete without bodies) for sale on Ebay. First question, does anyone know if the GP-7 body will fit the GP38 frame? I’m not familiar with the GP38, I’m sure I might need to make something to fit it to the frame since the mounting screws are in different places, but if the length and width is right and it fits the rails that are built into the frame, I would be willing to try it.
Second question, I’ve heard these GP38s have problems with the plastic gears blowing out. Is that a valid concern? I don’t want to waste my time or money on this project, any advise is appreciated.
Thanks!
If your talking about the GP-38 I’m thinking of you may want to have second thoughts as there not real good pullers they’ll pull like 3-5 cars and that’s about it. and if you have grades it might even not make it if you have the 5 cars. They came out of low end sets basically ( even if the price didn’t reflect that. ) basically they had transformer control electronic E unit and train sounds. for the gears I’ve heard both ways myself but basically the ones that didn’t have problems were religious about cleaning and lubing the train. now will they fit unknow to me. Now the more higher end ones with TMCC and all I have one of those also and its a great running engine. And can pull a fair load no problem
The body will fit on the frame although the handrails are a little different. You might have to work on the mounting but that would be no problem.Add some weight and will pull pretty good.

I don’t know about the frames.I’m not a fanof the plastic gears. Wife bought me one for Christmas awhile back and the gears where shot. Wasn’t even a used one , it was new in the box. I guess quality assurance is not big in china. The shop she bought it from changed it with out a problem. I got the impression this is a common problem with them. Now I just watch the gears a litle more careful and keep them lubed a little better. But if you get the frame cheap enough it sound like a good project.
