MR Magazine Goes Digital

My offer came yesterday for a MR Digital subscription for an additional $10.

I took them up on it and am very pleased.

It is superior to any fliers I’ve seen and I like reading it on the monitor rather than holding the magazine in my hands.

Congratulations to Model Rairoader Magazine.

I had no idea that electrons are so expensive.

That’s because we have to pay royalties to Al Gore for inventing the internet… [banghead]

I have been getting it on my Nook Color for the last 3 month. Good thing is I get it about a week before my paper copy arrives.

No trees were destroyed in the sending of the mesages, but a significant number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.

My wife has already promised me a hand-me-down iPad when she upgrades. She reads mostly in Japanese here at home, so has long relied on various e-editions of stuff from across the Pacific. It was the iPad that was the real breakthrough in her opinion for these sorts of things.

I don’t see making the transition until the e-version is available separately – and hopefully less expensively – from the paper edition. This new model needs to work to sustain the quality of publishing we’ve come to expect. On the other hand, making it clearly benefit the consumer is also a way to grow the subscriber base. Where that balance is is still unknown. But attractively pricing it is key to making it work.

Just checked it out on a Motorla Xoom. March issue is already out. Very cool.

The e-version is 1-year subscription is available separately at the same price as the paper version. However, I received an email today offeing it at a discount price.

I think this would only be good if you have a large e-reader/ Tablet. A magazine that uses a lot of photographs just won’t be the same on a 7" screen such as Kindle Fire.

I subscribe only to the digital edition thru the Zinio app, and yes, it is the same price as the regular one. I read it on my Acer Iconia 10.1" tablet, wich works very fine indeed!

I would hope that the good people at Kalmbach could lower the price somewhat for the digital edition though… as it is a more cost efficient way of making a magazine.

That add on for $10 was kind of hidden before, but I found it last month and added it. It’s nice having a portable copy. I do hope at some point they plan to offer updates to the DVD set to add newer magazines to the collection and most importantly, the index. Say every 5-10 years.

While I think it is a good idea for those who will use it on electronic media devices. I have trouble concentrating trying to read articles on a monitor vs a real magazine.

And I laugh at the term “portable copy” because a magazine is portable.

( I know what you mean by it what you mean is a convenient format for you)

Probably if I had a tablet or a reader I would like it more.

Gee, and all that money spent on REforresting trees to have an “unlimited” supply of paper products in the future!

I may be forced into an e-zine, may not be. The paper versions may end up costing more, maybe not.

I do remember when e-zines first came out and how they struggled as people were not ready for every magazine to be converted to their computer. Tablets MAY make a difference.

Until then, I will keep my magazines in the paper formats until they “perfect” tablets.

I’m not the least interested in a electronic MR due to the fact I like to read mine between trains when I’m railfanning and sipping coffee.

Another reason its bad enough having a high dollar camera, scanner and cell phone while railfanning now,add a e-reader,laptop or whatever and your a victim waiting to happen.

My wife has had a Nook Color for about a year and loves it.

If the magazine for the Nook is purchased via Barnes and Noble does Kalmbach know that you are a subscriber?

Is the magazine large enough for easy reading on the Nook?

I have other magazines where the digital version is simply part of the paper subscription price, not something for an extra charge. I believe MR should re-think charging extra or offer a digital version only for a lesser price.

John

Exactly. The two Conde Nast mags we get at my house (“Wired” and “Vanity Fair”) include excellent digital editions at no extra cost. I am disappointed in Kalmbach.

I also wish the digital edition is a subscriber perk.

You can also get other magazines in the hobby for free in digital versions…makes this a tough sell for me!
