MR SMALL LAYOUT CONTEST

Has anyone entered or thought of entering? My problem is the
contraints on photos. They have to be almost perfect to be
reproduced. I’m a better model railroader than photographer.

Where is this mentioned? I’ll send in pics of my HOn30 Micro-layout!

In the current issue of Model Railroader is the ad.

The layout has been dismantled, but I have some OK photos.

The winner of the smallest layout contest would most likely be the operational HO scale layout in N scale that Spacemouse posted a link to a while back.[:D] That little thing was pretty amazing and small! (the entire layout is the size of a thumbnail, and it really works![:O])

My layout is on a 2’ by 4’ board.

ESPEEFOAMER - Want to know the definition of “bull$%*”? - Taking pics in the former SP yard (now UP) in Fresno. Some former SP units, still in grey and red with that lousy UP pained on the cab. There is an older Geep lettered COTTON BELT. Pisses me off. I was storming off, saying how they destroyed the mighty.

My layout is on a 18" by 42" board.

I don’t have enough ca***o finish mine in time. Hopefully they will rerun the contest in 2 or 3 years. I’d just fall under the too big limit.

Mine is all track right now, no detail…

my micro is 9 inches by 10 inches, need an impetous to finish it![:D]

I think this is an annual contest, so I would expect to see you in print in a couple of years!!

Last time they did this my first “small” layout was not quite far enough along to enter. Now it has been dismantled in favor or my second layout under construction. A shame, because I would have loved to enter it, but I don’t haver the quality photos for it.

I can’t find the contest - I’m really modeling OF&S these days (Old, Fat, and Slow). Which issue and what page? Thanks in advance for helping the needy.

humbly yours

I’m still PO’ed about the merger!..UP is getting way too big for their britches!..and the 5% increase on the folks that are their best advertisers is the icing on the cake in the big coorporate world of sleeze!..chuck

I thought about entering my shelf layout. With a concerted effort, I could have finished it just before the deadline. But a new job and the need to prep the house for selling dashed any hopes of participating this year. The contest has been run before (2002 is mentioned in the ad), but I don’t remember seeing anything about it in recent years. I hope it does happen annually. It’s a great incentive to get stuff done beyond the trains-are-running stage.

I don’t remember the exact page, but the ad is a full-page one near the back of the magazine.

As I recall, this particular contest is run only every few years recently, with alternate possibilities/layout types being selected in other years.

I would encourage anyone with a layout that meets the contest criteria to give it a shot and enter. I did just that with my original 12 x 13 MA&G in the 2001 contest. In a few months I received a letter from MR informing me that while my entry was not one of the winners, it was a finalist and they purchased my manuscript for future publication. That future publication came out four years later (April 2005), but it did get my foot in the door with the magazine. Now I will have my current layout in Great Model Railroads 2007 later this year! (they came knocking at my door this time!)

Because of the constant cry for more small, room-sized layouts, this contest provides the magazine with many candidates for publication. It’s a win-win for everyone. I can tell you from experience that having your work (both modeling and authorship) appear in MR gives an enormous feeling of pride and accomplishment. For me, it was the realization of a childhood dream.

Keep this in mind - even if your entry isn’t chosen for publication, one of the photos might make it to trackside photos - a cool honor in itself.

I know we have a lot of talent on this forum, so by all means go for it! We’ll all benefit from having you share your work with others! [:p]

Good luck!!! [tup]

Hey, that’s my EXACT situation. However, my layout may end up being slightly over the limit. But I still won’t be done in time. Maybe next year[;)]

Their contests aren’t announced far enough in advance. I really wanted to enter the “kit bash” a station last year. I hardly had enough time to come up with a good idea, let alone build it while photographing. I am convinced these contests are designed for retired people or professional modelers. Just not enough room in these things for us full time work-a-day people.
