MRVP Layout Visits: David Popp’s N scale Naugatuck Valley
I could write an essay on my thoughts as I watched this video. I’ve always been facinated by David’s layout. It’s the only one to make me seriously consider changing scales.
I can tell the advantage of this new format, Video plus. With longer visits, not only do we get to know the layout better but we get to know the builder better. Thanks for your too brief reminiscences of your grandfather and farm life.
And talk about not seeing the forest for the trees! David, thanks for the tip on fall foliage. I never really noticed the coloring on ready-made vs. natural trees. Of course, living in the Pacific NW as I do, most all our trees are evergreens but we do have some deciduos ones.
I also enjoyed how you named some of your businesses, especially Andy’s Place. I’m glad to be a charter subscriber.
A nice look at a remarkable layout!
David and the MR staff, this is really going to be a great addition to MR. I have always enjoyed MR. Now video plus is going to inspire me to spend a bit more time on my layout. I hope you keep up this type of layout visit tour and narrative. This was only my second stop in viewing the new video plus and I can not wait to view some more. I enjoyed the personal information about the layout and it was fun to see that I did something very similar when naming some of my industries after friends and family. I did go a bit further as I named some of my free-lanced towns after family also. Thanks for the inspiration. I think I’ll check out one more item and then I’ll take some time to visit my layout.
As an N-scaler, I always enjoy seeing David’s layout. His skills, thoughts, and practices are an inspiration. The casual tour with the “insider” tidbits made the video even more enjoyable. I’d love to see steam on your railroad, too!
Hello Jay,
I’m not sure what is happening with the video, but for some reason your computer and the video hosting server are not staying in touch with each other. I’d suggest you contact our customer sales and service department at 1-800-533-664. They may have an answer for you to get you back up and running.
Best wishes with the trouble.
David
A wonderful tour of a wonderful Railroad. I hope to see more of this railroad with actual video of an operating session following at least 1 or 2 actual train crews as they work the line. Thank you!
I was watching David Popps NH layout until about the 9+ minute mark when it froze. This happened with a video last night–it too froze. Refreshing screen takes everything back to the beginning & I am unable to move forward to pick up where it left off before freezing. What’s up with the freeze frame?
Just watched the video, worked flawless for me. Enjoyed the video and it was cool to see the buildings named after folks David knows, that is a great idea! The first one to catch my eye was Grivno Coal, wonder if it has Cody’s office inside?..LOL
Outstanding! A very enjoyable 20 minutes.
I was thrilled to see this video tour on my first trip to MRVP. Like many others, I’ve been watching the growth of David’s layout since his first article on the NH boxcar! You’ve posted some very good insights on how the layout transformed over the years, and I really appreciated the comment about not planning the whole thing when you started - that encourages me!
David’s little railroad is one of my favorites. I have the Dream, Plan, Build video about its operations and enjoy all the articles which have appeared in MR about the railroad. Of course, David makes the railroad come alive through his relaxed style of presenting things. Great job, David!
Excellent video on the growth of Naugatuck over the years. I really liked the commentary on how the staging yard is used. I have examined the track plan in the past and often wondered how so much traffic was handled in the efficient amount of space. The note about the minimum track radius was a gem as well. Thanks for posting up the tour!
I love this layout and the colours of the fall foliage. If you were to make your own trees I assume you could mix the colour foliage to similuate leaf turning.
I wanted to replicate the Nagatuck but I couldn’t convert it to HO. Now i am freelancing a layout
Also I enjoyed the side bits of this video. Great work!
The people’s voices are out of sinc with the people. Is this on my computor or your end?
Hello Rich, thanks for the comments.
Yes, the plans are to do some operations videos on the Naugatuck this summer and put them up throughout the fall, so keep watch for more videos.
Best wishes on your modeling work!
David
David, Really enjoyed this personal and up close look at your layout. If this is indicative of the type of content you have planned for this venture I’m sure it will be a success.
Marty
Fantastic layout & tour, David.
As I’m just beginning to develop the “operational” side of the hobby, I’d really like to see you recreate the operation examples you did for “How To Build Realistic Layouts - Freight Yards” as a feature for MRVP.
Show me how you work the river job. Show me how Waterbury yard works during an ops session. Key graphics of car cards and waybillls over the live action video and explain how they relate to the moves being shown. That would be one exciting episode… or series!
Thanks for all you’re doing for our benefit with MRVP.
David, Thank you for the video on your “N” scale New Haven Naugatuck Valley railroad. Your layout has been a great inspiration. I look forward to seeing future video and articles on the layout.
David,
I have enjoyed seeing your layout up close and in great detail now that I am a MR Video Plus subscriber! These type of video’s are what make mrvp so great! That is awesome when you can personalize your layout with friends names on your buildings/industries (I saw the Grivno Coal and thought that had to be named after Cody). Your fall color scheme has me inspired.
Great layout.
Steve
Great series of videos!!! I just signed up and I feel it has already paid for itself. My only problem is finding all the parts of a series - I find it hard to locate the video I am looking for in this case the beginning of mounting switches under the RR, I feel you could make it easier to locate a video - a table of contents might help!! Thanks again for the Video Plus !!!
