Does anyone know if a this dcs commander can control synchronized smoke on a steam engine with proto 3?
No reason why not, the synchronized smoke is totally controlled internally for both conventional and DCS operation.
Some people are saying this way less options than a full dcs system
I have a Mth PRR 686 imperial s2 proto 3 . I have only a single track and don’t want to spend a fortune for the full dcs setup just to get synchronized smoking.
Welcome to the forums, David124! We have a nice crew here.
It doesn’t work in a conventional setup. The ad for this engine says that you need a dcs setup to enable it.
Thanks, I’m pretty new to model trains . I been into rc planes , heli and drones go years. I figured I would give trains a try.
Craig Fuller is going to like you! Welcome aboard.

You’ll have to be more specific. If this is an O-scale PS/3, I’ve never seen or heard of one that doesn’t run in conventional mode. I’ve been an MTH ASC for more than ten years, I have a pretty good idea of the capabilities of the product line.
Perhaps you could share the actual MTH product number so we could really know what we’re dealing with?
Okay. I have a MTH ppr 686 imperial s-2 -PS 3.0 #30-1560-1. Im running a single track around a room using a MTH z-4000 power supply no dcs and it powers up with engine sounds but no chuff or puff . Im new to trains so maybe you could give me some advice.
It runs great and proto sounds work great but it doesn’t have the chuff or synceronized smoke.
The MTH youtube video on this locomotive says you need a dcs system to enable other features like synchronized puffing smoke . the question i have is will the MTH 50-1028 dcs commander have this smoke feature because i really don’t need the full blown mth dcs system and i only want this other feature.
Sorry, but that’s a crock! PS/3 runs perfectly in conventional mode, I do it all the time when I test a repair.
No chuffing is really telling you that the tach reader isn’t working. In conventional mode, you lose chuff and cruise control. Since you are controlling the track voltage with the transformer, you probably haven’t noticed that cruise control isn’t working.
I’ll repeat for the final time. PS/3 runs just fine in conventional mode, and most assuredly chuffing will function.
Hello, my train does run just fine ,rail sounds engine sounds it runs very smooth around the track in conventional mode .What i wanted to know is if a MTH dcs commander 50-1028 will enable the synchronized puffing smoke ,some videos i watched said it doesn’t open up as many features as a full dcs system.
This dcs 50- 1028 system is about a third of the price of a full setup and i really don’t need the full setup because i have no accessories and don’t plan on getting any.
I have run PS/2 and PS/3 in conventional mode, with the DCS Commander, the DCS Remote Commander, and the full DCS system. There was never a time that the chuffing didn’t work properly or the smoke didn’t function. It’s true with the DCS Remote Commander you don’t have control of the smoke on/off feature, but it will smoke and chuff fine.
great, that’s the answer I was looking for. Thanks
