i have a steam engine 260 mth with ps1 and i’m changing it to ps2 everything went good till i got to the tape that goes on the flywheel my motor doesn’t have a flywheel is there a way around this or is there a motor i can replace this with. thanks for any help. jimmy austin
I am guessing this is the tin plate unit. These were made in two forms, Bild A Loco and with a “Precision DC can motor” with PS-1 sound. There was nothing to indicate a flywheel was used on this loco in the catalog. PS-2 loco’s generally uses the flywheel to attach the tach tape.
I can’t find a parts diagram for a 260E with the DC can motor, just the Bild-a-Loco. The Bild a Loco is open frame and mounted horizontally across the main plates and drives the wheels through a spur gear arrangement. I don’t know if they just subbed a can motor where the open fram was supposed to go or came up with a completely different drive train.
You may want to try and contact MTH to see if the drive train for the newer versions (PS-2) match the basic drive train for your locomotive and whether you can buy an new motor assembly with a flywheel. The DC can motors that are intended to support flywheels generally have longer shafts on both ends to accomodate the primary drive gear (usually a worm gear) and a flywheel on the opposite end. These are pressed (aka they are not meant to be removed/replaced) on and the entire assembly or gear/motor/flywheel is considered a single field replaceble unit.
