My first attempt at a model railroad movie...

Hey guys. I just got a new digital camera (Cannon A540), and thought I would give the movie mode a try. Click the link below to view the movie. Keep in mind that this is my first attempt, and that it is a still image camera, so the movie picture and sound are no that great. The trains are a little out of focus when the movie starts, and the loco. has a new sound decoder that I am not used to using, so I went a little overboard with the bell, but oh well. Let me know what you think. I’ll set up the scene for the movie.

An autorack train has just stopped in the siding, in order to allow the loaded coal to proceed on the main, after having stopped itself to have a helper locomotive tied on to the rear…

Also be aware the the file is pretty big, so if you are on dial-up, you may want to consider the file size.

Um there seems to be a problem

I try kicking on the link and I get a page what opens with “Search Results for” and then lists your link.

James

Yeah, I had the link wrong. Sorry. It’s fixed now.

Kevin, lay out was nices, I would like details on how you made the back drop. As far as the Quality on the new camera Kicked Caboose! I open the view to wide screen and it was still perfect!

Like I could afford it, what did the camera cost and what is it Pixel’s. Funny but 3 years ago when I got mine people where stunned at 3.2. Seems you can get a 5.0 for $200.00 at Wallmart?

Very nice. I’ve always enjoyed seeing pictures of your layout. Might be because I like the UP though. I think it was seeing your layout that kind of got me interested in modeling the UP. I hated UP before I started to view your pics. Very nice. Hopefully we’ll see plenty more.

Very nice!

The train speed looked very prototypical - gave the sense of a lot of mass being carried down the tracks. Make some more!!

Very good! You say that’s a ‘first attempt’? Looked like you’ve been at it for years.

That’s very nice. Not only does your obvious natural talent with the camera show, but your superb modeling as well. A couple of things though. Your rolling stock is just WAY too dang nice. Nasty it up some. Also, I’ve NEVER seen that many hoppers of ANY kind that were slap perfect . All of them I’ve ever seen were beat all up on the top lip. But hay, if you want it clean and perfect, it’s yours, and it certainly does look good. …But of course, I go online lookin for some beat up hopper cars and can’t find any. Understand when I say all of them I’ve seen are beat up that we have a rock quarry right down the road. ALL of those hoppers are beat all to snot. We have seen a few new ones from time time to time, but they don’t stay new very long.

Good subject and great layout. Nicely lit. Okay transition between the approaching and departing shots (I would have used a straight cut instead of the fade out/fade in).

Allen Keller watch out!

That looked good to me, I agree with George about the transition but what do you expect for your first movie. I just bought a bigger memory stick for my camera so I might have to give movie making a shot. Your camera makes great movies.

I have a feeling that there is either some practice shots done and evaluated before the final first version was posted; or the possibility that you might have talent in the use of the camera that needs to be employed more.

All things considered, I think you did a GREAT job with this movie. I could care less about the very clean hoppers or the overuse of the bell. You engines sounded just as good as they do in real life to me working the departure. How many of those loads did you have on that train?

The Camera quality is very good. What model camera did you use? It puts my little Sony 460 to shame in quality and sound pickup.

I am not sure if you had the camera pick up the sound or placed a recording microphone somewhere near the camera and later moved the audio onto the movie.

I did have trouble with the very high amount of green in what is supposed to be UP land. I kept thinking of the Narrows back east. However, I think the overall work is very well done for the progress you have made.

Did you have the Helper on the rear slaved to the head end? I did not notice any action along the couplers and was wondering.

I give this 8 anvils out of 10.

I enjoyed the video - Have you tried posting to YouTube?

Last week I saw a train with 106 (if I counted right) empty Coalporters that looked spiffy, shiny, new. OF course the build date was 4/06, might have been a connection…

[#ditto] I want to know how you made that background mountain! It looks perfect! Share your secret.

Nice! The bell and horn weren’t that bad at all. Great scenery!

[:)][:D]That was out standing,great work,keep it up!!!

JIM

Please invest in a new tripod the video is very shakey.

THAT IS NOT SHAKY.

Either that or you are trying to be sarcastic.

HUH? You haver been track side when these modern giants starts a 14,000ton coal drag? I have several times and let me tell you tripod or not the camera will shake because the ground is shaking.[:O]

Kevin,All I have to say is more please! [:D]
