My First Tree

Made from Mesquite limbs and WS folage

I like the rough texture of the trunk

All right. Nice start. That is the best one you ever made, but will not be the best you ever make. Like the rest of us, as you do them you will learn what little alterations are needed to improve them. From the looks of the pic, my main suggestion is to make the armature a little more bushy, so the is more tree compared to the size of the trunk. Keep us posted for many of us are learning this together and the pics help us all improve.

I like them, they remind me of some old Juniper or Cedar trees that I have seen along the upper elevations of the Blue Ridge Parkway in the Pisgah National Forest. Usually the trunks are quite barren and foilage is abundant toward the ends of the limbs as yours are modeled.

One question: Did you do anything to make the trunks look that way, or is that how the Mesquite limbs appear naturally?

They come that way

I bought a bag of them at My LHS

When we were in Mesa last year I walked up the side of a small hill and cut two garbage bags of similar twigs in about 20 minutes. It will make all the Oak trees I will ever need and was fun.

Cool! Less work you have to do!

Hay that ain’t fair! I am over run with misquite trees here and I hava yet to finc a limb that I gould use for a tree Very good tree. Mike.

very nice detail on that tree… the only question i have is with the trunk of the tree… it appears to get thicker as it goes up… a trick of the mind? anyway, id recommend either trimming the trunk so it doesnt get fatter as it goes up or pick another limb to use…

keep up the nice work!

Ok, Fellow texan I got a Question: Do you do anything to the wood before you start making the tree?..And How exactly do you apply the ground foam(foliage)? I am probably going to go Harvesting sometime this weekend and if i can get my tree to look even half as good as yours i’ll be a happy camper.,so, any more info than what you have given? As you can see from this pic of my first ever tree made i need as much help as i can get LOL.( the one in the middle)

Thanks

Cc.

Well Cc i don’t see anything wrong with your tree looks good to me

I think we all try for perfect and i’m not sure why cause nature doesn’t

I didn’t do anything to the wood

I placed it in a foam block

painted white glue on the branches with a small brush

and then used tweezers to stick WS clump folage on the limbs sometimes making a hole in the clump folage with the point of the tweezers so it would slide over the branch

Awsome tree! Talk about a real tree. If it was not in the white foam I would have never known it was fake.

I can’t wait to get that far!

Hey terry, well thanks for the cuddos, and yep your probably right about the perfection thing. Thanks for the info on your trees i am going to try and gather up some wood this weekend and try some i think, your looks great so i’ll have to give it a try and see what happens.

Thanks again

Chris

Ok I planted the tree and the cows just couldn’t wait till the glue was dry to move in and lay down

Also poured the water for the pond and of course they waded in for a drink

Nice trees, I hope i can make mine as nice when i get to tree making.

Kevin

Terry, If that is the same tree, (or did you update it a little) it sure looks better in the context. The scene is very good, and I like little explainations like you gave. Thanks for the post.

Yes that’s the same tree. Now i gotta paint the cows

They are supposed to be Herfords but they look more like Jerseys

I even e-mailed WS about them being the wrong color
