hello all, Went to the hobby shop today to get some things and saw this in the display cabinet, and I knew I HAD to have it!! this is one of the most detailed locomotives I have ever seen!! And runs silently!
I guess this is kind of a review hehe.
When I tested it at the hobby shop, I was taken back by the level of detail and the neat little strobe light on the roof, which is constantly light in DC mode, not sure if it flashes in DCC though. [:D]
The paint and lettering was RAZOR sharp and the seperation lines are perfect, the cab detail is really amazing, a full control stand and dash etc!
When i got it home i hooked up 25 freight cars and put it on “crawl” it crept along my layout with 25 cars in tow with ease, not one stutter or jerk! [:O]
It had a very smooth speed transition from low to high and back again.
The detail on the roof and underframe was really well done! the see through grilles on the fans on the roof and the very fine grille on the sides.[:)]
This locomotive is quite heavy and run very well with my P2K SD60M around the layout.
Overall I’m really impressed by this latest Genesis locomotive, it’s exceptionally well done and well worth what I payed! this is my first Genesis since a SD75M from the dredded first run. ( I no longer own it)
finally two more pictures for your enjoyment. [:D]
Nice model. You said the new Genesis runs well with the P2K SD60 also. Does it run slow like the SD60’s run??
Glad to hear it is a good running model. I noticed the model does not have window shades, and that is correct for the SD45-2 when they were new, as they did get window shades for about a year or so on the road.
I recieved my Genesis SD45-2 (with sound) in CSX paint back in July. Many have complained about the sound quality of the MRC decoders, but I have found that if you manually turn down the volume using the volume-control pot located on the circuit board and slow the bell down a bit (it’s possible with DCC), it will sound as good as it looks and runs![;)]
Man, I was gonna wait for the Conrail ones to come out, but since I model both CR and CSX, I might just snag myself a CSX one first! Great looking engines guys!
It’s not the volume that some of us are referring to…it’s the actual quality of the sound recordings themselves.
I’ve had the opportunity to be at a live demonstration at my LHS of the sound unit. The turbo was accurate…in fact it was too dominant. My LHS’s owner commented that it reminded him of a Lockheed L-1011 jet. But, at high or low volumes the prime mover and available horn sounds are very poor in comparison to LoKSound, QSI, and Soundtraxx sounds. I recognized one of the “selectable” horn sounds, a Nathan M5, and it sadly paled in comparison to the M5 horn on the Soundtraxx DSX. If you get the opportunity and do a side-by-side comparison you would notice the difference immedietly.
Don’t take this negatively, this is a beautiful unit and I plan on getting at least one non-sound unit in SCL and install a LokSound or Soundtraxx sound set up. But as Paul3 mentioned on another thread, Horizon selected the cheapest sound they could get yet they are charging BLI/QSI prices.
I am thinking about doing the same thing as Antonio, buying a DC unit and installing Loksound. Does anyone know if the nonn-sound units come with the fram milled for speakers? That would make things much easier.
Antonio, I don’t plan on buying one of these locomotives, but my LHS has them priced at $159 with DCC and Sound, and I think that’s a little lower than anything comparable in BLI/QSI (Their little NW2’s may have been close to that price). But I’m not saying that the lower price is justication for a sound that’s not up to par.
Those are some beautiful looking engines there![:D] Now you’ve gone and made me want one.[}:)] That unfortunately won’t be happening soon, though. I’m at the moment determined to save up for an old Alco Models brass diesel, so I can maybe get it fixed up and looking nice, and then I can say I own brass.[:D] (if I could afford it, I might have decided to get OMI instead, but Alco is about all I can come close to affording)
Don’t worry, I agree with you! The sound quality is poor compared to QSI or Soundtraxx, I just made it sound a little better by turning down the volume. The sound is still distorted, but not as bad as it was when it came from the factory. That’s all I was saying.
