I was there about a month ago, the train I was on was pulled by a 2-8-0 I’d much rather chase the train to frostburg then ride it to tell the truth. And please say you railfanned all around cumberland, you we’re right on the mountain sub and sandpatches terminuses, hell you could spend a whole day at the throat of the yard down by the amtrak station!
If you havent, seriously look into it, if you have the iron resove to drive down tiny mountain roads (And by tiny I mean tiny the wheels of your car would be on the edge of a 30 foot vertical drop!) chasing a loaded coal train out of Grafton Wva to Terra Atla Wva and down into cumberland is a experiance that you’l never forget. Theres also 17 mile grade up to Altamont out of Cumberland via Viaduct Interlocking, a chase thats a little more attached to civilzation. If you dont wanna ride into the middle of the boondocks, any place along side Sandpatch is a great place to see trains, its a heavyly trafficed line, wereas the mountain sub is only a few trains a day.
I rode that train 5 years ago and for fathers day. It was being pulled by the 2-8-0 backed up with a GP 40. They said that the year before the steam engine broke a conecting rod and it took 4 hours to get it back down the mountain with the passengers. It was a great ride. I really enjoyed looking out of the train cars while going around a corner and watching the steam engine do it’s work.
One sharp looking GP30 if I do say so. The future of the WMSR is in doubt, hope a ammacable decision for all involved parties is reached to assure continued operation. I recall summers spent along the Western Maryland of F7 lashups in white, black and red mixed with newer models, when Helmsetters curve as was most of the WM double tracked. I’ll have to make plans for trip back sometime to greet a old friend, great photos.
We went there in 2002…part of our whirlwind vacation that started in Niagra Falls and headed south to Steamtown, B&O Museum in Baltimore, Cumberland and the “Wild Mary”, East Broad Top and finally the Cass Scenic Railroad in WV. We had a pretty full train, with the 2-8-0 on the front and the GP30 pushing. It was a great ride. I’d love to do it in the fall sometime. That or another ride on the Cass during their railfan weekend!
Wife and I went last year and really enjoyed it: it’s a very nice operation, well thought out, and well run. We were lucky enough to make it when 734 was in steam, and I got a few good shots of her.
