I just purchased a couple of Atlas N scale B39-8’s, and right out of the box I noticed the engineer’s side of the fuel tank is at an angle, making the fuel cap stick out too much. I tried removing it and refitting the tank, but still no good. Any suggestions one fixing this?
Visually the B40’s and B39’s are nearly identical, as far as I know. Seminole Gulf purchased ex-LMX B39-8’s, so that’s what these are supposed to be. I think a few stores online label them in the categories B39/40-8/W’s to denote all the variations.
IF I see this correctly, you are referring to the fuel tank on unit 591 sticking out further on the rear of the unit? Is it dragging? It looks, to me, that it is not fully seated on the locomotive frame… Is it an Atlas unit that comes in two halves? If so, it may not be in place fully/correctly… Of course, it maybe that the frame is milled a little off, so no amount of “remove and replace” will fix it… I would try it though. It might just be a little “off” of where it is supposed to be.
Exactly right! The rear is sticking out too much. It isn’t dragging, but definitely bothers my nit-picky eye. i tried removing the shell and reseating the fuel tank, but it still seems crooked.
I don’t have a B39-8, but do have some Atlas B23-7s. The frame has different sized notches on each end so if the wrong end is forward the tank drags just like that. The fuel fillers line up on both so they look right but it may be worth checking.
I actually checked that too. On the B39-8’s the fuel tank only fits on one way, so it’d be hard to mess uo alignment. I also checked to make sure the fuel sight matched the prototype side with photos to ensure correct orientation.
I would also make sure that the frames are screwed all the way together at both ends. If not, the flare might be the reason for the tank not to sit right.
