How do I go about changing the number board on an N Scale BLI E8? I want to go from this

Since I don’t have the model yet I don’t know how the number board is set up. Are the numbers painted on? Or are they decals? Any help is appreciated.
I’ve encountered a similar situation with N scale F units. What I usually do is get some black trim film and carefully cut it to cover the number board, then apply it with some decal softener. I then coat the numberboard in lacquer (usually dullcote applied with a toothpick) and let it dry. I then repeat with the numbers I want on the unit. Hope this helps.
