N Scale Caboose

What cabooses are available in N scale for matching with an Athearn 2-8-0 1890s era steam loco? Currently I have a Micro Trains wood caboose but it seems too large for a steam engine from this era.

In general, there are NO N scale cabooses on the market appropriate for an 1890s era layout, besides the Bachmann bobber (bobbers were banned on common carriers in 1912).

The M-T wood caboose is possibly the worst model they make. If you want a decent four axle wood cab, look for the older one by Con-Cor/Rivarossi. It’s similar to many of the larger cabooses from the turn of the century, including W&LE (1880), NKP (1885) and NYC&HR (1890) 35 foot long cabs. The Roundhouse (now Athearn) wood cupola caboose is nice too, but is more of a WWI-era cab.

I modified this one from a Bachmann Old Timer set. I blanked the middle windows and modified the cupola to look more Northeastern. Once it was detailed out a bit, it really makes a nice model. I pull it behind a little tourist consist with my Atlas Shay.

I ran into the same problem as you’re having, and ended up going with one made by MDC Roundhouse. Of course I had to repaint and decal it, but it was worth every bit of the trouble, and looks great!.

Good luck to you.
