N scale dummy switch stands

I am looking for a cheap, fairly good-looking way to make dummy modern switch standsfor my N scale layout. I use Peco turnouts and just throw the points by hand, but for realism I need something to represent the machine. I have over 100 turnouts on my layout, so dummy castings that cost $3-$5 each are not really a viable option for me. Any ideas? Thanks.

Ron,

Are you looking for something that will turn to indicate switch setting or something that will just stand there?

Most stands don’t have much to look at. Can you make some small targets to attach to the top? A piece of styrene rod or paino wire could be the verticle, with a short piece attached to look like a handle. If you wanted it movable, insert a piece of appropriate size styrene tubing into the layout.

Just a thought.

Good luck,

Richard

Micro Engineering include a cast, unpainted stand with their N scale turnouts. Perhaps you could purchase some from ME.

I am not really concerned with having movement. It just looks really blank to have a turnout with not switch stand of any kind. I have a method for making tall ones like one micht see in the 50’s or earlier. I was hoping someong had an easy method of replicating the small ones like you commonly see today.

What if you took one of those oversized caboose industry stands and enhanced it to look like one of new stands with giant “back saver” Handles with a wedge shaped piece of styrene?
