N Scale Mountain Height

What is a good rule of thumb on height for an N Scale 3x5 layout with a mountain in the corner. I just don’t want it to be overbearing.

Thanks

I guess one way to look at it,would be what part of the world, you are modeling and the trains you are running.

Take a N-scale figure and stand him in the corner and then take a look at it…

Cheers,

Frank

Mountains come in all sizes, as you know. For N scale, a mountain of 1.5 ft would be quite adequate, with other mountains perhaps higher painted on the background. Is there going to be a tunnel with a train track beneath it ? You can build mountains from crumpled newspaper, or stacked insulating foam. I have a HO layout with five tracks beneath a free standing mountain built with plywood arches covered with window screening, plaster cloth, and Hydrocal plaster. If it is to be covered with trees, I would drill the holes for the trunks before painting the hillside. Leave horizontal ledges for trees on the hillside. Bob Hahn

If you are having trouble getting a sense of the “real size” and height of the Hill/ mount, fabricate some sort of mock-up. Draped sheets, towel etc over anything that works (boxes, paint cans crumpled newspaper).

Once you have a size/ shape in mind you can lay up either weaved cardboard strip or stacked foam. This is quite easy to change/ modify as you go. Many times when doing scenery, I think I have it planned , only to allow it to “evolve” as being built.

Do you have a prefered method and figured access if needed?
