Hi,
I’m builging a large N scale layout (approx. 400 feet of track with 45 automatic switches) and very much appreciated some help as to what would be the best way to connect this layout’s signaling (arount 15-20 signals, mostly Model Power and NJI)together and into a single place (board,so I can switch lights as the train exits or enters a block…or to make it ever easier…what would you do if you had this situation and wanted to get use of more technical devices like automated train sensors?

I’m not planning on DCC yet, but built many bloks. When finished, this layout will have four main railroads (with yards and spurs) all of them connected -at some points- throughout interchanges.

Hello,
I have used three lamp signals that are operated by circuit boards found in Electronic Projects for Model Railroaders, by Peter J. Thorne. The boards are easy to make and etch and best of all cheap. Each board will operate two three lamp signals and works great for bidirectional operational. Will work with signals with bulbs or LEDs. Works great for mainline but I could not get the turnout board to work.
Here is how my signals work. When a loco enters a block it triggers a CDS cell which is connected to the circuit board. The signals in the block occupied turn from green to red. The signals in the preceding blocks also turn from green to yellow. The signals continue to change as the train travels down the track. The boards also have relays that can be used to trigger crossing lights and other items. Works great on my railroad. I hope that this has helped.
