N Scale Steam

First post. Could anyone recommend a reliable N Scale Steam Loco? I’m getting back in the hobby after a few years. I previously did diesels but steam turns my wheels now. It would be on a small layout. I would prefer a Mikado, Hudson, Pacific, or any really… without breaking the bank. Thanks! [:)]

I would recommend the following:

Kato’s USRA Heavy Mikado
Bachmann/Spectrum’s 2-8-0 (but provision needs to be made for a working front coupler.)
Con-Cor’s J3a Hudson

I have all three engines, and all are good runners. (Although I am still steamed that no provision was made for a Micro-Trains or compatible coupler on the pilot of the Consolidation.) And all can be had for under $200.00 a unit.

Thanks for the info. [:)]

Check out the Atlas Mogul. For about $90 they may be the model of the year! Take the time to break it in, & get a set of MDC cars to pull (either overland or short overton).

I know that you can modify the front end to accept a coupler… i believe maybe a 2002 or 2004… iwill have to ask my club president. he has converted his, and i want to do the same.

the roundhouse 2-8-0 is supposed to be a very good running loco although the tender is a bit higher than the prototype.

That would go really well with the atlas 2-6-0 and the bigger 2-6-0 that roundhouse are bringing out this year.
