I was recently looking at the thread in this forum on green industries on model railroads, and it suddenly occured to me that building a wind farm would be the perfect thing to cover a large unsceniced (and also hilly) section of my n-scale layout, which is still under construction. Now here’s my question:
First, is there anyone currently manufacturing an n-scale wind turbine kit? (powered or unpowered)
Secondly, can anyone give any advice on building these models from scratch? Are there any “how-to” articles anyone has found? (I’ve been looking, but I’m getting nowhere)
Faller nakes a powered wind turbine in N-scale (Walthers has it at a sale price of $34 each). My understanding of current wind turbines is that they can vary greatly in size, with the largest being those used offshore.
I’d head for the Dollar Tree and see if I could find some of those rubber band powered balsa plane kits. Splice the prop into a three blade and mount it to some sort of housing, maybe from a model airplane kit, or some miscellaneous shape from a junk box.
I was able to shoot this one while it was being transported to Meyersdale, PA. Then take that assembly and mount it on top of a tall round column. Plastruct or Evergreen should do nicely. Paint the whole thing flat white, add some details, and your all set.
I had actually found the powered kit on e-bay just after I posted this, but for the price involved, I think I’d be better to build my own.
I was thinking that using a propeller from a plane kit would work well, and the rest shouldn’t be bad…when it comes down to it, turbines are one of the simplest models out there.
Thanks again, and wish me luck…perhaps I’ll post finished photos on here if it all goes well!
