Been perusing the net some to try and figure out some information on N&W RS3s in their earliest years. As I understand, they arrived numbered 92-99 in 1955 and renumbered 300-307 in 1956.So my questions is what year did they have the N&W round heralds painted on? The earliest photo I’ve found of an N&W RS3 with the round heralds is from 1962.
N&W started using the round gothic herald paint scheme in 1958, the hamburger herald was introduced in 1962. The railroad didn’t repaint units right away, so the old schemes would still be seen on locomotives for up to several years after the change. N&W retired some of its RS-3’s as early as 1964, so they may not have ever had the later paint scheme.
Thank you for the response it is exactly what I wanted to know. Now I need to figure out what models and decals would work when recreating an as-delivered pair.
Alvie, for the RS-3’s as delivered you can use the steam locomotive decals for the road name. I’m sure that N&W used the same stencils when they started dieselizing.
