I have had my NCE Power Cab controller for about five years, and instead of when a short happens, and it restarts the system, the shorting sound remains and does not reset the system. Is it fried? Is there something malfunctioning with the circuit breaker?
First determine if it’s the layout or the power cab itself. Unplug the two buss wires from the Power Cab panel and try shorting at the plug. If it returns and boots normally then the Power Cab is not the issue. More than likely you have either not enough feeders or weak rail joiners not making good connection.

Hello All,
Good advice!
Some other questions:
- When you say “short” can you describe, in more detail, the sequence of how this fault happens?
- Does this happen when you first power up the Power Cab?
- Is the short caused by a locomotive or by the wheels of rolling stock?
- Does it happen over a specific section of track?
- Have you changed added anything to the track work lately- -more specifically a reversing section?
- Does the short clear when you cycle the power (turn on and off)?
- Do you know if your turnouts are power routing?
- Are the frogs powered?
The more specific you can be with the details and sequence of the fault helps the great folks on these forums assist you in troubleshooting.
Hope this helps.
