Need help finding out what decoder I have

Hi I just got a Kato C44-9w N scale locomotive and want to find out what decoder it has (The seller hasn’t messaged me back yet). Thanks in advance

welcome, is it dc or ddc

Without doing too much digging it seems to look like one of the variations of the ‘drop-in’ Digitrax decoders:

I think he was probably lying about it usage if it’s really a 2003 decoder. He said it was lightly used for maybe 1-2 hours. It does look and run like brand new though. Thanks

Read CV’s 7 and 8, and post the values here. That may provide a clue.

thank you was it factory install or customer

Idk I bought it on eBay. The description just said it had a Digitrax decoder.

Ok I’ll do that after work tomorrow.

You can go the digitrax web sight an click on products then decoders .the sight will have all decoder made.

The seller replied to my message. It’s a DN163K1B mobile decoder. Going to try to set it up now.

Good for that seller. Whenever I am selling a loco on eBay with a decoder that I installed, I identify the decoder in the Description.

Good to know. I’ll look for that next time.

CV8 189 = Digitrax
CV7 between 49 and 51 = Series 3 with FX3, silent, readback

I’m not sure what you’re asking, but cv8 is 129 and cv7 is 49. I was coming back here because I’m trying to program it and it’s not working. You can reset the decoder in cv programming cv8 and cv data 8? I have a Zephyr Express

Any time there is a DCC decoder configuration/function question I suggest installing/using JMRI Decoder Pro. It makes decoder stuff 1000X easier.

Yup, sorry for the typo. It should have been:
CV8 129 = Digitrax
CV7 between 49 and 51 = Series 3 with FX3, silent, readback.

But I wasn’t asking anything. I was letting you know that by reading those CV’s, you can determine at least the decoder family (Family being the same firmware/capabilities, but maybe different form factors and/or different number of outputs.)

So yes, a Digitrax DN163K1B would be a Series 3 with FX3, silent, readback. You can go to the Digitrax web site to get all the info you want/need for that decoder.

And yes again, writing a value of 8 to CV8 will reset the decoder to factory values. However, it won’t change CV8, it’s just a signal to the decoder to reset itself. Your Zephyr is very capable of performing that operation.

Have you ever set it up with a Zephyr Express? It’s saying I’m connected, but I get a 306 error (Jrmi says it’s a connection error). I’m not finding an answer to fix it yet.

Thanks for clarifying. I got the user manual from Digitrax. I can get my train to run on the default settings, but haven’t been able to program any new functions yet. I’m trying Jrmi too, but have some connection error (even though it says it’s connected).

What interface device are you using, or do you have a DCS52 with the built-in interface? And what OS is on your computer?
