I have just torn my old HO layout apart and am starting a new one. I have decided to go DCC this time, but don’t have a clue where to start. My real joy is building and not operating. I would like a unit that can run at least to seperate engines at one time, other than that I am just looking for a good solid system. I know this is a loaded question, but does anyone have any thoughts on what I should be looking at? (Make, model, type, etc.) Any good, current references such as back issues of MRM or book.
Based on what you’ve just offered as your focus, I gotta echo what Tim said. Bachmann EZ-DCC is the simplest, least expensive way for you to go if you’re sticking with HO.
You can pick up the Bachmann EZ Command DCC system from Wholesaletrains.com (http://www.wholesaletrains.com) for $53. (Just picked one up myself. [:)]) $79 will buy you the EZC system, PLUS a DCC-“equipped” locomotive. Not a bad deal. It’s a very straight-forward and simple system to setup and use.
According to Bachmann, it’s supposed to work and program (with limitations) any manufacturers decoder. I’m still trying to clear up some specifics on the last point, because I’ve been given some conflicting information otherwise. Stay tuned to the forum and I hope to have some farily definite news along those lines in the next few days. Here’s the link, if you’re interested:
